Dr. Nick Elam is the host of Sports Rule Pod and the originator of basketball’s Elam Ending®, one of the most influential sports innovations of the modern era. Best known for reimagining how basketball games can end by removing the clock from the final portion of play, Nick has spent years studying how thoughtful rule changes, better game formats, and creative ideas can make great sports even greater.
Nick first developed the Elam Ending® concept on March 10, 2007, as a way to preserve a more natural and exciting style of basketball through the end of every game. After years of research, persistence, and outreach, the format was first implemented by TBT: The Basketball Tournament in 2017 and later brought to a global stage at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game. Since then, the Elam Ending® has continued to grow across professional, international, and grassroots basketball.
But Nick’s work extends far beyond one basketball innovation. His background spans education, leadership, athletics, mathematics, sports analytics, mentoring, and public speaking. He has served as a high school math teacher, school principal, athletic director, and now as a professor of educational leadership at Ball State University, where his work connects leadership, learning, and athletics.
Through Sports Rule Pod, Nick brings that same curiosity and disciplined thinking to conversations about thefuture of sports. The show explores innovations in sports, the career journeys of individuals who make sports great, and the lessons learned from coaches, broadcasters, athletes, executives, scholars, and sports professionals. Each episode looks at how ideas move from concept to implementation—whether through new rule changes, fan-submitted innovations, playoff formats, draft mechanisms, technology, or overlooked moments in sports history.

Nick’s approach is grounded in a simple belief: sports are already great, but with the right mix of imagination, research, and practical thinking, they can become even greater. On Sports Rule Pod, he gives serious attention to the ideas, people, and stories that help sports evolve.
Listeners who have an idea for a rule change or innovation in sports are invited to submit it for Nick to scrutinize on a future episode.
